What does my fire relief contribution go towards?
There are miles of trails to be repaired. Trees are down, bridges are gone, landslides have occurred, and as the rain comes our way and disrupts this scorched landscape, further damage is a near certainty. To make these trails safe, sustainable, and accessible again, many will need to be cleared and rebuilt, and in some cases, slopes will need to be stabilized and trails may be fully redesigned.
Every dollar contributed to this raffle will go directly to rebuilding our local trails destroyed by fires.
About Joey Kochlacs:
Joey’s a Californian, born and raised. Santa Cruzan for the past 8+ years himself but has had family here since the 1860s. Joey has since built a business here on the Westside of Santa Cruz hand-crafting incredible furniture sourced from local trees. And as a bike rider and trail runner, Joey was an avid user of many of the trails destroyed in the fires and felt this campaign was a perfect way to give back.
...and the table:
The table Joey donated is a gorgeous waterfall coffee table from a walnut tree that was removed from downtown Santa Cruz back in 2014!

About John Caletti:
John’s another Californian, born and raised. After attending University in Santa Cruz, John has lived in Santa Cruz since 2000. With a multitude of competitive manufacturers, building a bike business in Santa Cruz is no easy task. However, John has accomplished just that. With the bike industry now seeing its highest demand, maybe ever, John currently has a 1-year waitlist for bikes but is taking the time to give back to his local trails.
...and the bike:
The frame John is donating is any custom-built steel bike frame of the winner’s choosing. Caletti cycles offers road bikes to mountain bikes and everything in between.

A bit about the CZU Lightning Fire Complex:
The recent CZU Lightning Complex Fire has devastated Santa Cruz Mountains communities and vastly altered outdoor access for nature lovers in the region. The fires burned more than 85,000 acres of land throughout the region, destroying homes, businesses, and historic parks and trails that attract thousands of visits from both out-of-towners and locals each year. Parks affected include Big Basin, Butano, Año Nuevo, and Fall Creek State Parks.
While fire is a natural part of forest ecology, these ecosystems will take years, if not decades, to return back to their former glory. The local outdoor community depends on these natural areas for exercise, meditation, and healing, but right now, the access timeline for these areas is murky. Our public agencies need every bit of support they can get in order to expedite the process of opening these beloved outdoor spaces back to the public.
The damage to trails is profound. Trees are down, bridges are gone, landslides have occurred, and as the rain comes our way and disrupts this scorched landscape, further damage is a near certainty. To make these trails safe, sustainable and accessible again, many will need to be cleared and rebuilt, and in some cases, slopes will need to be stabilized and trails may be fully redesigned. It will take a significant amount of work to get these trails back in shape.
To catalyze the recovery of these areas, Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Stewardship is creating the CZU Lightning Fire Trail Recovery Fund to support land managers and do the work necessary to rehabilitate and reopen their parks. This fund will cover the costs for SCMTS’s professional crew and volunteer coordination efforts to provide boots on the ground support where most needed. This work may include trail clearing, trail design, trail reconstruction, erosion control, restoration and the many other tasks needed to recover from fire damage. Funds may also be allocated for direct support of Land Manager material and staffing needs.
If you have enjoyed the beauty of the Santa Cruz Mountains, please consider donating to support the swift rehabilitation of these historic natural areas. The forest has always been there for us when we need it - now it’s our turn to give back.
