A pumptrack is akin to a skate park but is built for cyclists, rollerbladers, skateboarders, and scooters of all ages — even the littlest ones. It’s called a pumptrack because, instead of pedaling or pushing, you generate momentum by pumping your body up and down. The Westside Pumptrack is only the second fully paved pumptrack in the greater Bay Area. The first fully paved pumptrack just opened at Ramsay Park in Watsonville — also built by SCMTS.
Check out this awesome video, courtesy of Bell Helmets, all about the paved pumptrack we just built over at Ramsay Park in Watsonville. We can't wait to bring the same treatment to Santa Cruz.
This is a big deal. Here's why:
Pavement - will last longer and is easier to maintain than dirt
28 new obstacles (rollers, banked turns, jumps, etc) - designed with both maximum fun and maximum safety in mind
Landscaping with native, drought-resistant plants
Hang-out areas, like benches and picnic tables
Before & After
The before image is from 2013, when the Westside Pumptrack was first built. The after photo is from the Ramsay Park Pumptrack in Watsonville, which SCMTS completed in 2021.
Why Now?
Led by Mayor Hilary Bryant, Chris and Heather Wagner-Juaregg from Another Bike Shop, and local property owner William Ow, the Westside Pumptrack opened in 2013 at the corner of Western Dr. and Highway 1.
Thousands of kids, teens, and adults have played on it every year since then.
After nearly a decade of normal wear-and-tear, the Westside Pumptrack needs a facelift to make it more fun, more safe, and more accessible to more people.
The demand for free, accessible, and safe outdoor experiences is at an all-time high.
